Activating Defensemen Program (2002, 2003, 2004)

Activating Defensemen”

Defense only Program – 2002/2003/2004

The role of a defensemen in the game of hockey continues to evolve and grow.  The skill set of a defensemen today must range from fluid skater with creative instincts on the offensive side, to a strong defender who can manipulate the opposition with good body and stick position.

The Academy of Hockey staff will focus on the necessary skills to excel in all 3 zones of the ice including shutting the opposition down in the defensive zone, transitioning to offense through the neutral zone and creating offense from the blue line in the offensive zone. Skills of focus will include:

  • Body and Stick position:
    • Poke checking
    • Angling
    • Net front
    • Dictating opposition through stick position
  • Defending the Rush
    • Gap control
    • Transitions
