In Season – Skill Development Programming

In Season – Bantam Pod Development Program

The Academy of Hockey’s Fall & Winter Bantam Pod Development Program will consist of development sessions focusing on a 360-degree, holistic approach to accelerating the development of each individual player. Adam Mair, Academy of Hockey Head Development Coach will lead a group of 10 players through a series of nine development sessions with an on-ice emphasis on the Technical, Physical and Mental aspects of hockey.

Technical – the skill and situational specific program will consistently test participants. Areas of concentration include advanced edge control for balance and agility with and without the puck, controlled puck handling leading to more consistent puck possession, body position to ensure the player is at a position of strength either when on the attack or defending, as well as shooting tactics providing deception through puck angle and/or manipulation.

The Academy staff believes that these skills translate to the highest-level game.

Physical – IMPACT training sessions emphasis on core strength, balance, agility, and explosive movements in addition to a total body evaluation by IMPACT Sports Performance including a complete physical evaluation to review any imbalances, predispositions to injury, joint alignment, and more.

Mental –  In addition, the Academy staff will videotape two games of each participant, and an Academy Development Coach will attend one of these games. Included in this program, a Head Development Coach Adam Mair will hold a player/parent evaluation meeting to review the game videos and overall performance of the player.

To participate in this program, please submit the application below prior to September 15th.  The Academy of Hockey staff will review all applications and advise all applicants of the result of their application. The program is open to all Bantam level (2001 and 2000 birth year) players. The cost for each participant is $849.

–       Limit of 5 players (2001) per session and 5 players (2000) per session

–       3:1 Player to Coach ratio

In Season – Pee Wee / Bantam Skating & Agility Development Program

The Academy of Hockey’s In Season Pee Wee / Bantam Skating & Agility Development Program will focus on a 360-degree, holistic approach to accelerating the skating ability of each player.

Academy of Hockey Skating Development Coach, Mike Ansell, will lead a group of 20 players through a series of nine skating and agility sessions with an emphasis on increasing stride strength, weight transfer on edges to ensure proper balance, techniques to assist in added mobility to generate power, and explosive movements with and without the puck. The program is open to Squirt and Pee Wee level (2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 birth year) players. The cost for each participant is $399.

–          Sundays 4:00pm – 5:00pm

–          5 to 1 player to coach ratio

In Season – Goaltending Pod Development Program

The Academy of Hockey’s In Season Goaltending Pod Development Program will consist of a 360-degree, holistic approach to accelerating the development of each goalie. Director of Goaltending for the Academy of Hockey, Martin Biron, will lead a group of 12 players through on nine sessions with an emphasis on the Technical, Physical and Mental aspects of goaltending.

Technical – detailed footwork, in-crease positioning to make easier saves, control and tracking rebounds, as well as balance and reaction in game situations including screens and deflections;  Physical – IMPACT training sessions emphasis on core strength, balance, agility, and explosive movements in addition to a total body evaluation by IMPACT Sports Performance including a complete physical evaluation to review any imbalances, predispositions to injury, joint alignment, and more.

Mental – Special goalie handbook to be utilized for pre-game preparation and post-game analysis, detailed video sessions with a concentration of game situations to reinforce on-ice instruction especially with puck awareness and efficiency of movements.

In addition, the Academy staff will videotape two games of each participant, and an Academy Development Coach will attend one of these games. Included in this program, an Director of Goaltending Martin Biron will hold a player/parent evaluation meeting to review the game videos and overall performance of the player. The program is open to all 2003, 2002, 2001, and 2000 birth year, travel players. The cost for each participant is $899.

–       2:1 Player to Coach ratio; 2 goalies per net

–       Thursday IMPACT Session 4:00pm – 4:45pm

The Goaltending Development Program is open to a range of birth years from 2005 – 1996, and the participant must be a travel or high school level player. The cost for each participant is $499.

In Season – Academy Innovation Sessions

Director of the Academy of Hockey, Kevyn Adams, Head Development Coach Adam Mair and other members of the development staff will lead a group of 16 players through innovative and specific development concepts that are challenging for youth hockey coaches to focus on during the team’s season.  While not new to the game of hockey, these game situation and skill concepts will be presented in a unique manner that is essential to growth in these areas.  The Academy Innovation Sessions are: face-offs, defensive tactics in the offensive and defensive zones, net front play, backhand only, body position and body contact, offensive puck handling/deception/dekes. Each 50-minute on-ice session is followed by a 30-minute video session in HARBORCENTER’s state-of-the-art classroom theater.  The program is open to all Pee Wee travel level (2000 and 2001 birth year) players. The cost for each session is $59 per player.

Goaltender Training (1999 – 2002)
The Academy of Hockey’s Goaltending Sessions will focus on furthering the progression of foundational goaltending techniques and movements.  The Academy of Hockey Director of Goaltending, Martin Biron, will lead 18 goaltenders through a well structured session with a concentration on powerful, concise movements, skating, stance, positioning, save selection, rebound control and recovery. The Technical skating sessions are single sessions, and are open to the first 18 goalies that register.  The cost for each participant is $39.

Body Contact (2001)
The Academy of Hockey’s Body Contact Session concentrates on delivering and receiving a body check with form and control. The Academy of Hockey Head Development Coach Adam Mair was very difficult to play against during his 615 NHL games due to his physical style of play.  Coach Mair will carefully review with the players the reasons why body contact is important, the positional angles to generate a successful body check, as well as how to deliver and receive body contact in a controlled environment. The Body Contact sessions are single sessions, and are open to the first 25 Bantam Minor (2001) players that registers. The cost for each participant is $39

Positional – Defensive Tactics (2000 – 2001)
The Academy of Hockey’s Defensive Tactics Skill Sessions are constructed to focus on the position of defense. The Academy of Hockey development coach Jeremiah Crowe and the Academy staff will conduct a skill and situational orientated session, concentrating on backward skating techniques, puck retrieval, defensive net front play and offensive from the blue line.  The Defensive Tactics Skill sessions are single sessions, and are open to the first 25 Bantam players that registers. The cost for each participant is $39.

Puck Possession Session – Small Area (2001-2002)
The Academy of Hockey’s Compete Sessions concentrate on puck possession. Through vigorous research, the Academy of Hockey development staff has identified multiple ten-foot areas of the ice rink where possession creates offensive opportunities, but as important, minimizes opposition opportunities.  Our instruction will focus on body position, puck control and elusive possession tactics that can optimize success. The Puck Possession Competition sessions are single sessions, and are open to the first 25 players that registers. The cost for each participant is $39.
