IN-SEASON DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

The Academy of Hockey is extremely excited to announce our 2014-2015 In Season Development Programs. The 2014-2015 In Season Development Programs are comprised of development sessions designed to supplement players’ in-season team schedules and accelerate player development both on and off the ice. Our core Academy Programing will consist of:

  • Pod Development Program – Pee Wee and Bantam aged travel level players
    • 9 week program that includes on ice, off ice and classroom training
    • Application process for admittance to program
    • Focus – individual player tactics and situational awareness
    • 4 to 1 (or less) player to coach ratio
  • Skill Curriculum – Mite, Squirt, Pee Wee aged players
    • 9 week on ice program
    • 5 to 1 – Player to coach ratio
    • Age appropriate, on ice instruction with core hockey skill sets as the areas of concentration
    • Open registration based on birth year
  • Skating Curriculum – Mite, Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam aged players
    • 9 week on ice program
    • 5 to 1 – Player to coach ratio
    • Age appropriate, on ice instruction with core skating fundamentals and technique as the areas of concentration
    • Open registration based on birth year for youth boys and girls.
  • Skill Sessions – Mite to Bantam aged players, girls hockey only sessions
    • Single on ice sessions offered at different points during the year
    • 5 to 1 – Player to coach ratio
    • Age appropriate, on ice instruction with core hockey skill sets as the areas of concentration
    • Open registration based on birth year for youth boys and girls.
  • Academy Innovation Sessions – Squirt, Pee Wee and Bantam aged travel level players
    • Single, innovative skill or position specific sessions
    • 30 minute video session to support on ice teaching
    • 4 to 1 player to coach ratio

All Academy programs will utilize the one-of-a-kind facilities located inside HARBORCENTER – the only three-rink complex in the NHL – including two NHL-size rinks, classroom video analysis, and the IMPACT Sports Performance state-of-the-art training facility. Browse the curriculum below by selecting your birth year. All Academy programming is open to male and female players, with the exception of female only programming. There are a limited number of spots available for each program many of which will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Academy of Hockey’s In Season Mite Development Sessions will focus strictly on foundational skill introduction for the player in the beginning stages of their career.

Skating Fundamentals Session (2010 & 2009)
The Academy of Hockey’s In Season Mite Skating Fundamental Sessions focus on foundational skating competencies to include balance, posture, coordination and strength. For aspiring hockey players just beginning to skate, the Academy of Hockey development staff want to deliver a fun, welcoming experience that will further their interest and excitement for the game of hockey.  The Fundamental skating sessions are single sessions, and are open to the first 25 players (2010-2009) that register. The cost for each participant is $39.

The Technical skating sessions are single sessions, and are open to the first 25 Mite players (2006-2008) that register. The cost for each participant is $39.

The Academy of Hockey development staff will conduct a technique oriented, up-tempo session, with education, instruction and correction being our goals. These Individual Hockey Skill sessions are single sessions, and are open to the first 25 Mite players that register. The cost for each participant is $39.

The Academy of Hockey’s Goaltending Sessions will focus on furthering the progression of foundational goaltending techniques and movements.  The Academy of Hockey Director of Goaltending, Martin Biron, will lead 18 goaltenders through a well structured session with a concentration on powerful, concise movements, skating, stance, positioning, save selection, rebound control and recovery. The Technical skating sessions are single sessions, and are open to the first 18 goalies that register.  The cost for each participant is $39.

The Academy of Hockey’s In Season Squirt/PeeWee Developmental Skating & Agility Program will focus on a 360-degree, holistic approach to accelerating the skating ability of each player.

Academy of Hockey Skating Development Coach, Mike Ansell, will lead a group of 20 players through a series of nine skating and agility sessions with an emphasis on increasing stride strength, weight transfer on edges to ensure proper balance, techniques to assist in added mobility to generate power, and explosive movements with and without the puck. The program is open to Squirt and Pee Wee level (2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 birth year) players. The cost for each participant is $399.

In Season – Goaltending Development Program


The Academy of Hockey’s In Season Goaltending Development Program will consist of a 360-degree, holistic approach to accelerating the development of each goalie. Director of Goaltending for the Academy of Hockey, Martin Biron, will lead a group of 18 players through on nine sessions with an emphasis on the Technical, Physical and Mental aspects of goaltending.

Technical - detailed footwork, in-crease positioning to make easier saves, control and tracking rebounds, as well as balance and reaction in game situations including screens and deflections;  Physical – IMPACT training sessions emphasis on core strength, balance, agility, and explosive movements in addition to a total body evaluation by IMPACT Sports Performance including a complete physical evaluation to review any imbalances, predispositions to injury, joint alignment, and more.

Mental – Special goalie handbook to be utilized for pre-game preparation and post-game analysis, detailed video sessions with a concentration of game situations to reinforce on-ice instruction especially with puck awareness and efficiency of movements.

The Goaltending Development program is open to a range of birth years from 2005 – 1996, and the participant must be a travel or high school level player. The cost for each participant is $499.

-       Limit of 9 goalies (2005-2002); and 9 goalies (2001-1996)

-       3:1 Player to Coach ratio

In Season – Academy Innovation Sessions

Director of the Academy of Hockey, Kevyn Adams, Head Development Coach Adam Mair and other members of the development staff will lead a group of 16 players through innovative and specific development concepts that are challenging for youth hockey coaches to focus on during the team’s season.  While not new to the game of hockey, these game situation and skill concepts will be presented in a unique manner that is essential to growth in these areas.  The Academy Innovation Sessions are: face-offs, defensive tactics in the offensive and defensive zones, net front play, backhand only, body position and body contact, offensive puck handling/deception/dekes. Each 50-minute on-ice session is followed by a 30-minute video session in HARBORCENTER’s state-of-the-art classroom theater.  The program is open to all Squirt travel level (2005 and 2004 birth year) players. The cost for each session is $59 per player.

Individual Hockey Skills (2004-2005)
The Academy of Hockey’s Individual Hockey Skill Sessions are structured to ensure foundational puck handing, passing, shooting and competition are the focal points. The Academy of Hockey development staff will conduct a technique oriented and faced paced session, with education, instruction and correction our goal. The Individual Hockey Skill sessions are single sessions, and are open to the first 25 players that register. The cost for each participant is $39.

Puck Possession Session – Small Area (2003-2004)
The Academy of Hockey’s Compete Sessions concentrate on puck possession. Through vigorous research, the Academy of Hockey development staff has identified multiple ten-foot areas of the ice rink where possession creates offensive opportunities, but as important, minimizes opposition opportunities.  Our instruction will focus on body position, puck control and elusive possession tactics that can optimize success. The Puck Possession Competition sessions are single sessions, and are open to the first 25 players that register. The cost for each participant is $39.

In Season – Pee Wee Pod Development Program

The Academy of Hockey’s In Season Pee Wee Elite Development Pod will consist of development sessions focusing on a 360-degree, holistic approach to accelerating the development of each individual player. Jeremiah Crowe, Academy of Hockey Development Coach will lead a group of 16 players through a series of nine development sessions with an on-ice emphasis on the Technical, Physical and Mental aspects of hockey.

Technical – the skill and situational specific program will consistently test participants. Areas of concentration include advanced edge control for balance and agility with and without the puck, controlled puck handling leading to more consistent puck possession, body position to ensure the player is at a position of strength either when on the attack or defending, as well as shooting tactics providing deception through puck angle and/or manipulation.

The Academy staff believes that these skills translate to the highest-level game.

Physical – IMPACT training sessions emphasis on core strength, balance, agility, and explosive movements in addition to a total body evaluation by IMPACT Sports Performance including a complete physical evaluation to review any imbalances, predispositions to injury, joint alignment, and more.

Mental – detailed video sessions with a concentration of game situations to reinforce on-ice instruction especially with in categories of situation awareness and efficiency of movements.

To participate in this program, please submit the application below prior to September 15th.  The Academy of Hockey staff will review all applications and advise all applicants of the result of their application.  The program is an option for Pee Wee level (2003 and 2002 birth year) AAA players. The cost for each participant is $499.

The Academy of Hockey Development Staff will lead a group of 20 players through a series of nine development sessions with the areas of concentration including: technical skating, possession based puck handling, shooting with power, and small area competition.

The program is open to all Pee Wee level (2003 and 2002 birth year) players. The cost for each participant is $450.

Mental – Special goalie handbook to be utilized for pre-game preparation and post-game analysis, detailed video sessions with a concentration of game situations to reinforce on-ice instruction especially with puck awareness and efficiency of movements.

In addition, the Academy staff will videotape two games of each participant, and an Academy Development Coach will attend one of these games. Included in this program, an Director of Goaltending Martin Biron will hold a player/parent evaluation meeting to review the game videos and overall performance of the player. The program is open to all 2003, 2002, 2001, and 2000 birth year, travel players. The cost for each participant is $899.

In Season – Academy Innovation Sessions

Director of the Academy of Hockey, Kevyn Adams, Head Development Coach Adam Mair and other members of the development staff will lead a group of 16 players through innovative and specific development concepts that are challenging for youth hockey coaches to focus on during the team’s season.  While not new to the game of hockey, these game situation and skill concepts will be presented in a unique manner that is essential to growth in these areas.  The Academy Innovation Sessions are: face-offs, defensive tactics in the offensive and defensive zones, net front play, backhand only, body position and body contact, offensive puck handling/deception/dekes. Each 50-minute on-ice session is followed by a 30-minute video session in HARBORCENTER’s state-of-the-art classroom theater.  The program is open to all Pee Wee travel level (2002 and 2003 birth year) players. The cost for each session is $59 per player.

The Technical skating sessions are single sessions, and are open to the first 18 goalies that register.  The cost for each participant is $39.

Body Contact  (2002)
The Academy of Hockey’s Body Contact Session concentrates on delivering and receiving a body check with form and control. The Academy of Hockey’s Fall & Winter Bantam Pod Development Program will consist of development sessions focusing on a 360-degree, holistic approach to accelerating the development of each individual player. Adam Mair, Academy of Hockey Head Development Coach will lead a group of 10 players through a series of nine development sessions with an on-ice emphasis on the Technical, Physical and Mental aspects of hockey.

Technical – the skill and situational specific program will consistently test participants. Areas of concentration include advanced edge control for balance and agility with and without the puck, controlled puck handling leading to more consistent puck possession, body position to ensure the player is at a position of strength either when on the attack or defending, as well as shooting tactics providing deception through puck angle and/or manipulation.

The Academy staff believes that these skills translate to the highest-level game.

Physical – IMPACT training sessions emphasis on core strength, balance, agility, and explosive movements in addition to a total body evaluation by IMPACT Sports Performance including a complete physical evaluation to review any imbalances, predispositions to injury, joint alignment, and more.

Mental –  In addition, the Academy staff will videotape two games of each participant, and an Academy Development Coach will attend one of these games. Included in this program, a Head Development Coach Adam Mair will hold a player/parent evaluation meeting to review the game videos and overall performance of the player.

To participate in this program, please submit the application below prior to September 15th.  The Academy of Hockey staff will review all applications and advise all applicants of the result of their application. The program is open to all Bantam level (2001 and 2000 birth year) players. The cost for each participant is $849.

Director of the Academy of Hockey, Kevyn Adams, Head Development Coach Adam Mair and other members of the development staff will lead a group of 16 players through innovative and specific development concepts that are challenging for youth hockey coaches to focus on during the team’s season.  While not new to the game of hockey, these game situation and skill concepts will be presented in a unique manner that is essential to growth in these areas.  The Academy Innovation Sessions are: face-offs, defensive tactics in the offensive and defensive zones, net front play, backhand only, body position and body contact, offensive puck handling/deception/dekes. Each 50-minute on-ice session is followed by a 30-minute video session in HARBORCENTER’s state-of-the-art classroom theater.  The program is open to all Pee Wee travel level (2000 and 2001 birth year) players. The cost for each session is $59 per player.

Technical - detailed footwork, in-crease positioning to make easier saves, control and tracking rebounds, as well as balance and reaction in game situations including screens and deflections;  Physical – IMPACT training sessions emphasis on core strength, balance, agility, and explosive movements in addition to a total body evaluation by IMPACT Sports Performance including a complete physical evaluation to review any imbalances, predispositions to injury, joint alignment, and more.

Mental – Special goalie handbook to be utilized for pre-game preparation and post-game analysis, detailed video sessions with a concentration of game situations to reinforce on-ice instruction especially with puck awareness and efficiency of movements.

The Goaltending Development program is open to a range of birth years from 2005 – 1996, and the participant must be a travel or high school level player. The cost for each participant is $499.

-       Limit of 9 goalies (2005-2002); and 9 goalies (2001-1996)

-       3:1 Player to Coach ratio

TEAM OUTREACH

The goal of the Academy Team Outreach Program is to provide an unbiased view of your hockey team as well as help accelerate their development to achieve measurable success . An Academy of Hockey Development Coach will spend dedicated time and resources to understanding the team by first meeting with coaching staff to discuss team concepts, goals and players. The Academy coach will utilize our video technology to capture you team’s game action, which is essential when building on ice sessions and measuring progression. When the video analysis is complete, the team will utilize HARBORCENTER Theater for viewing and corrective discussion with coaching staff.

The Academy team packages overall will provide age and skill specific training, and will consist of on ice development sessions,  game video analysis of your team, team meetings to review video, and multiple meetings with coaching staff. The on ice session will be conducted on your team’s traditional ice not at HARBORCENTER.  The video sessions will be conducted at HARBORCENTER Theater.

Academy Blue Team Package:

  • Three (3) Game video analysis
  • Three (3) Separate Coaching staff meetings
